Thinking Prompts:

These Thinking Prompts have been designed and selected for grades 3-5 Visual Arts.  The prompts used below apply specifically to projects that we have done in class.  They are used to launch inquiry, delve deeper and foster critical thinking.  Where images are used to explore concepts Visible Thinking Core Routines*  help to guide inquiry. Routines commonly used in partnership with the selected images are:
  • What Makes You Say That?: What's going on? What makes you say that? This is used to ask students to describe an image, object or artwork and interpret what they see. Then they must defend their interpretation.
  • Think Puzzle Explore: A great way to engage students in drafting questions and launching inquiry.  When introducing a new concept the group drafts questions, confusions and what they want to know using these three prompts.
  • See Think Wonder: What do you see? What do you think about that? What does it make you wonder? Similar to Think Puzzle Explore, except this allows for individual analysis of a work of art and is fantastic for launching discussion.
  • Think Pair Share: A popular routine for EAL students (SIOP model), this encourages participation by asking students to think about the topic and share with the person next to them.  The prompts guide students to think thoughtfully before sharing. 
  • I Used to Think.., But Now I think...: A great routine for self reflection when discovering a new topic.  It asks students what did they think of the subject before exploring it and how has that though or impression changed with their learning. 

Grade 3: 
  1. Icecream Sculpture
  • Driving Question: How do we as sculptors design a paper-mache sculpture of an icecream from one of Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings?
  • Thinking Prompts: Thiebuad paintings &/OR Claes Oldenberg sculptures.

2.    Heidelberg house found-object Sculpture
  • Driving Question: How do we as architects (like Iggy) and engineers (like Rosie) create a found-object model of a Heidelberg house?
